On February 21, 2008, the Zonta Club of the Antelope Valley will present the prestigious ATHENA Award to an outstanding woman in our community. This award is presented to a woman who has attained and embodies the highest level of professional excellence in her business or profession, has devoted time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community and actively assists women in realizing their leadership potential.
The ATHENA Society, named for the Greek goddess of wisdom, honors achievement and recognizes excellence in businesses that promotes leadership opportunities for women.The ATHENA Award was first presented in 1982 and is administered by ATHENA International, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. ATHENA is an international non-profit organization dedicated to supporting, developing and honoring women leaders, inspiring women to achieve their full potential—creating balance in leadership worldwide. There are over 300 active award programs and more than 5000 awards have been presented to ATHENA Recipients in the United States and around the world.
The ATHENA Recipient will be selected from nominations made by community leaders and that is where we need your help in identifying a potential recipient. Within your organization there are undoubtedly individuals who are outstanding women who are professional and community leaders. The ATHENA Award program was developed to recognize and honor outstanding business and professional individuals for excellence in their chosen field, for providing valuable service to their community and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional goals and leadership skills. The ATHENA Award® was created in 1982 by ATHENA Founder Martha Mayhood Mertz through her partnership with the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce in Lansing, Michigan.
ATHENA Award Recipients are individual who:
Demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business or profession.
Provide valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community.
Actively assist women in realizing their full leadership potential.
The ATHENA Award recipient is honored with an ATHENA sculpture and here in the Antelope Valley the recipient is also given a gold and diamond ATHENA pin.
All ATHENA Award nominees are honored with a lapel pin and certificate.
